What to check before cleaning stone, wood and delicate surfaces

Identify materials, review care instructions and agree on a method before detailed cleaning begins.

Similar-looking countertops may be natural stone, quartz or another material with different care requirements. Floors, wood finishes and upholstery also vary. Identify a delicate surface and check its instructions before cleaning it.

Miami and Hialeah homes often contain several materials in one room. Applying the same method everywhere for convenience can be unsuitable.

Gather information before the visit

Look for manufacturer specifications, an installation invoice or care instructions. If you cannot identify a finish, say so in your request. A photo can explain the situation without necessarily confirming the material.

Point out existing scratches, stains and damage to distinguish them from the requested work. Cleaning and restoration are different: wear, damaged finishes and permanent marks may require another professional.

Agree on products and methods

Ask what equipment and products are proposed and whether they fit the manufacturer’s instructions. Follow labels and avoid mixing products. If compatibility is uncertain, pause the treatment until it is clarified.

  • Identify natural stone separately from engineered materials.
  • Explain special finishes on wood.
  • Ask how excess moisture will be avoided on sensitive materials.
  • Confirm any areas to exclude.

A test in an inconspicuous area, when appropriate and authorized, may be part of an assessment. It does not guarantee every stain can be removed or every finish will react the same way.

Separate cleaning, treatment and repair

Removing surface dirt, treating a stain and repairing a finish are different jobs. Ask the quote to identify which is offered. If you need shine restored, damage repaired or a surface resealed, confirm the business specifically performs that work.

For fabric and carpet, share care labels and any known stain source. A material assessment should come before a promise of results.

Persistent moisture needs a different discussion

For ongoing dampness, leaks or a returning problem, surface cleaning may be insufficient. Review the source and whether specialized assessment is needed before hiring household cleaning to solve it.

Keep instructions in writing

A short note listing materials, exclusions and priorities helps coordination. Confirm the scope and limitations before work begins, so you can decide clearly what to request and what results can reasonably be assessed.

Keep preparing for your visit
